As a homeowner, you probably wouldn’t want to take on the task of sweeping your own chimney as it involves some hazardous components that are inside your chimney that need to be removed. And it can also be dangerous if you need to get up on the roof to do that. Also, once you clean your chimney, do you know what it’s supposed to look like? Many people don’t really understand what they’re looking at before or after their chimney’s been swept or cleaned. And so they don’t know what it’s supposed to look like. So you may need to rely on a professional to do that. On the other hand, if you do understand what it’s supposed to look like, some of the things that you can look for are an eighth of an inch of buildup or more, it needs to be swept. And that needs to be removed completely back down to the bare metal or the bare masonry. And if you don’t remove all of that, there’s going to be combustible creosote remaining. And even after a sweeping, if that stuff is not removed, you can still have a chimney fire.
